Ellis Island is the first stop where the immigrants from all over the world arrived in US. Their name were taken and recorded once they arrived there. Although they’re there, they still need to take a test to see if they could actually go into the US or not. Those who are 16 or older, they had to take a test. The tests were based on their ability to read, 30 or 40 words were taken out and they have to read it. It was written in their language, so if they couldn’t read it, they won’t be admitted to the US. Most immigrants that passed entered the US and begin to start their new life.
In 1921 the Quota Law was passed by Congress to limit the number of immigrants coming into the US, since there were a large amount of people arriving here. However, if there’s good news, there’s always a bad news. The good news was they’re allowed to go and stay here but some of their family might not be lucky enough to enter. For those who didn’t make it, they were sent back to their own native country. Different people have their own pros and cons. Depending on how they use their ability, they could help someone that needs it more, so they too could also pass the obstacle and go through with their life.
Ellis Island was made a historical place after things quiet down. It’s open to all who wants to know more on their background. It’s located at the mouth of the Hudson River in New York Harbor between New York and New Jersey close by to the statue of liberty. The Statue of Liberty is a landmark made from the effort of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. It stands there as a symbol to remind each and every one of us what freedom is and as a symbol of international friendship between America and France. The immigrants saw US as a land of opportunity. From back then until now, Ellis Island still is a big tourist attraction.
